A good business gift shows that you listened. A poor one shows that you had a budget and a deadline. The difference is rarely money; it is attention.
Know the rules first
Many companies, and most government and public-sector bodies, restrict what employees may accept. Before you send anything, find out whether the recipient's organisation has a gift policy. A gift that puts someone in a difficult position damages the relationship it was meant to strengthen. If in doubt, choose something modest or a gesture that is not a physical object, such as a handwritten letter or a book.
Match the gift to the relationship
- A client of many years: personal and considered. Something that remembers a conversation or an interest.
- A new contact: modest and tasteful. A good notebook, a pen or a premium box of dry fruits.
- A senior leader: fewer, better things. Avoid anything with your logo displayed prominently.
- A team: shareable items such as sweets or a hamper.
Festive timing
Diwali is the main gifting season in India, and delivery slots fill up early. Plan weeks ahead, not days. Other occasions matter too, including New Year, a promotion, an anniversary of working together or a successful project. Know the recipient's own festivals, and do not assume Diwali is the right occasion for everyone.
What tends to work
- Quality dry fruits, sweets or gourmet food from a trusted maker, with fresh packaging and a clear date
- A good pen, notebook or desk accessory
- A book chosen for the person
- A plant or a considered home item
- An experience, such as a meal or a tasting, where it is appropriate
What to be careful with
Alcohol should be given only if you are certain the recipient drinks and the setting allows it. Leather items can be a poor choice for people who avoid it. Heavily branded corporate freebies read as an obligation, not a gift. And a very expensive gift can embarrass the recipient or raise questions.
Presentation matters
Good packaging, a clean delivery and a short handwritten note do more than extra spending. Write the person's name correctly. Say one specific thing, such as "thank you for the introduction in March." Send it so that it arrives before the festival, not after.
Keep a gift record
Keep a simple list of what you gave, to whom and when. It prevents repeating a gift, and it helps you think about who you have forgotten. Gifting is a small habit that, done consistently, makes a relationship feel looked after.
